How it works

  1. 1

    Read the prompt

You are shown what to match — a flag, a crest, a character or a color to recall.

  2. 2

    Adjust three sliders

Hue sets the color family, saturation sets its intensity, brightness sets how light or dark it appears. The preview updates live.

  3. 3

    Submit and compare

The real color is revealed next to yours and scored out of 10. Five rounds make a run.

About this mode

Thirty creatures from the first generation, each stripped of the color that made it recognisable.

Gen 1 designs were built around a single dominant color, chosen so a creature could be told apart on a screen the size of a matchbox. That constraint makes them ideal to guess: you know the shade exists, you have seen it a thousand times, and yet reproducing it from memory is another matter — Pikachu leans warmer than most people remember, and Charizard is closer to peach than to red.

Examples from this mode

  • Charizard
  • Squirtle
  • Gengar
  • Snorlax
  • Gyarados
  • Lapras
  • Mew

How scoring works

Each guess is scored out of 10 based on how far your color sits from the real one. Five rounds are averaged into a final score, so one weak round does not decide the run. The reveal after every guess is the part that makes you better — it shows whether you missed on hue, on saturation or on brightness.

Leaderboard

Finishing a run places you on the public leaderboard for this category, with a 24-hour ranking that resets daily and an all-time ranking. No account is needed — just pick a nickname.

Frequently asked questions

Which Pokemon are in the quiz?

Thirty creatures from the first generation, chosen to be widely recognisable and to cover the full range of colors, from Pikachu and Charizard to Gengar, Snorlax, Lapras and Mew.

Which part of the Pokemon do I have to match?

The dominant color of its body — the yellow of Pikachu, the orange of Charizard, the blue of Squirtle. It is removed from the artwork, and your color fills the gap as you move the sliders.

Is this quiz official or affiliated with Pokemon?

No. ToonTone is an independent fan-made color game. Pokemon are referenced for identification only and remain the property of Nintendo, Game Freak and The Pokemon Company.

Is it free to play?

Yes. Every mode on this site is free, with no account, no sign-up and no ads. The iOS app adds more challenges, multiplayer and daily runs.

Can I play on my phone?

Yes. The game works in any modern mobile or desktop browser, with nothing to install.
